Last year (2006) I tried something different with my seedlings. In
mid-July (the area was not ready earlier) I direct sowed in the ground. I did
not pre-soak the seeds and did not water them after planting, as I did not have
a water supply in the area at the time. Some crosses germinated quickly on
their own. Others did not germinate until after it rained. Some did not
germinate at all. The ones that did not germinate at all may have not been
viable to start with. Our killer winter of 2006/07 eliminated any tender
plants & all that survived that winter should be able to handle anything Mother
Nature can throw at them.
This summer I was very excited to see scapes forming on approximately 40% of
these young seedlings. The following are photos of some of these
young plant blooms. Some have less than perfect form, but I will give them
at least one more year for evaluation of color, form, plant habit, branching &
bud count. I give them top marks for even blooming this young.
